Most positive progressions push you to increase bets after every win. The 2-1-2 Manhattan system does something different. You start at 2 units, drop to 1 after a win, climb back to 2 after a second win, then keep adding 1 unit for every consecutive win after that. Lose at any point and you reset to 2.
That counterintuitive dip from 2 to 1? It locks in a guaranteed profit after just one win. No other common positive progression does that so early.

That inconsistency matters. We'll clear it up in the next section.
At its core, the 2-1-2 is a positive progression system. Bets go up after wins and reset after losses. If you've looked at the Paroli (hard cap at 3 wins) or the 1-3-2-6 (fixed 4-step cycle), the 2-1-2 sits in different territory. It's open-ended. After the initial 2-1-2 pattern, the bet keeps climbing for as long as you keep winning.
The system does not change the house edge. Nothing does. What it changes is how your money moves during a session.
Here's where most articles on the Manhattan betting system get messy. Some describe a repeating 2-1-2-1-2 loop that never goes above 2 units. Others describe it as increasing only after the third win. The Wizard of Odds created what he calls "the simplest and most logical version," and it's the one that makes the most internal sense.

The version that loops as 2-1-2-1-2 indefinitely is simpler but gives up the system's upside during hot streaks. Notice Round 5. The loss at 4 units stings, but you've already banked $80 in wins. The reset to 2 units at Round 6 keeps the damage contained. Rounds 7-8 show a clean WL cycle that nets +$10. That's the system doing exactly what it's designed to do.
This is the part most guides skip. The dip from 2 to 1 after the first win is the entire personality of the 2-1-2 system. It's the same profit-locking mechanic that appears in the 1-3-2-6 system (where step 3 drops from 3 to 2), just applied earlier.

You win 2 units at step 1. You're up +2. The system drops your next bet to 1 unit. If you lose at step 2, you lose only 1 unit. Net result: +2 minus 1 = +1 unit profit for the cycle.
Now compare what happens without the dip. If you just bet 2 again at step 2 and lose: +2 minus 2 = 0. Breakeven. The whole win is gone.
The dip guarantees that a win-then-loss cycle (WL) produces a 1-unit profit instead of nothing. That's the system's best trick.
Look at that WL and WWL column. Both produce +1 unit. You only need to win the first bet and then any one of the next two bets to close the cycle in profit. That's a genuinely favorable structure for short runs.
The L outcome (-2 units) is the only losing outcome in the opening sequence, and it's the maximum single-step loss. One bad spin costs 2 units. That's it.
After the initial 2-1-2 pattern, bets keep climbing: 3, 4, 5, 6... There's no built-in cap. This creates the same structural weakness you see in the Reverse Martingale and uncapped Contra D'Alembert: the streak always ends with a loss, and that loss is always at the highest bet of the cycle.
Quick example. You win 7 in a row. Your bets were 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Total won: 2+1+2+3+4+5 = 17 units. Then you lose the 6-unit bet. Net: 17 minus 6 = +11 units. Still profitable, but you gave back 6 of a possible 23.
Longer streak. You win 10 in a row. Bets: 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Total won: 2+1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 = 38 units. Lose the 9-unit bet. Net: 38 minus 9 = +29. You gave back 9 of a possible 47.
The trade-off is clear. The longer the streak runs, the more you surrender on the final loss. That's the cost of an open-ended system.
The fix is straightforward: set a personal cap. After 5 or 6 consecutive wins, pocket the profits and reset to 2. This turns the 2-1-2 into something closer to a capped system like 1-3-2-6, but with the early profit-lock still intact.
