The 1-3-2-6 comes from the same family as the Paroli (Reverse Martingale), but it adds a layer of risk management that Paroli does not have. Where Paroli just doubles after every win (1-2-4-8...), the 1-3-2-6 pulls back at step 3 to protect profits before the big swing at step 4. That pull-back is the system's defining design choice. Origin is unclear. The Wizard of Odds states he does not know who created it or its history. It has been in circulation since at least the 1990s and appears in gambling guides across baccarat and roulette circles, but no single inventor is credited.

Scenario 3: Win three, lose at step 4 (WWWL)
Reset. Breakeven. Three wins in a row and you lost nothing. Read that again.

The maximum you can lose in any single cycle is 2 units. Not 6. Not 12. Two units. That happens on a WL result, and that is the ceiling. That is the system's primary safety feature.
A loss at step 1 costs only 1 unit. Tiny. You shrug it off.
A loss at step 3 produces a profit of 2 units. You already won at steps 1 and 2 (+4 total), and the step 3 loss only costs 2. You walk away ahead.
A loss at step 4 is a breakeven. You won +6 from steps 1 through 3 and lost 6 at step 4. Net zero. Not a disaster, not a win. Just a reset.
A completed cycle (WWWW) pays +12 units. The big one.
Here is the design elegance: three of the five outcomes are neutral-to-positive. Only L (-1) and WL (-2) cost you anything, and both are small. You can lose at 3 of the 5 outcomes and still be fine.
One thing to watch: the WWWL outcome (0 units) feels like a loss psychologically. You won three bets in a row and ended up with nothing. Your brain registers that as failure. It is not. It is breakeven. That emotional mismatch is where many players incorrectly decide the system "failed" and start making impulsive changes.
This is what makes the 1-3-2-6 worth understanding.
The drop from 3 units (step 2) to 2 units (step 3) looks wrong. Every other positive progression keeps increasing. Paroli goes 1-2-4. Reverse Martingale goes 1-2-4-8. The 1-3-2-6 breaks that pattern on purpose.

After winning steps 1 and 2, you are up +4 units. By betting only 2 at step 3, you guarantee that even if you lose, you keep +2 units of profit. The reduced bet at step 3 works as a profit lock. You are banking 2 units of guaranteed gain before swinging for the big step 4 payout.
Compare that to Paroli (1-2-4, three-win cap): After winning steps 1 and 2, you are up +3 units. Your step 3 bet is 4 units. If you lose, you are down -1 unit for the cycle. No profit lock. No safety net. Your earlier wins are fully re-risked.
Compare to Reverse Martingale (1-2-4-8): After three wins, you are up +7 units. Your step 4 bet is 8 units. A loss costs you -1 for the cycle. Again, the entire accumulated win goes back on the table.
The 1-3-2-6 sacrifices maximum upside in exchange for mid-cycle protection. Paroli's three-win cycle pays +7; the 1-3-2-6's WWWL pays 0 instead of -1. Whether that trade-off appeals to you depends on how much you value protecting gains along the way.
For players who have ever watched three straight wins evaporate on one bad bet, this pull-back is not strange. It is the whole point.

The ratio of expected money lost to money wagered per session matches the underlying house edge of the game almost exactly. In other words, over enough cycles, you lose the same percentage of total money bet as a flat bettor.

If you play crypto baccarat with this system, the Banker bet gives you the best long-run numbers. The Player bet is a cleaner mechanical fit (no commission calculations), but the edge difference is real over thousands of hands.

The 1-3-2-4 was developed as a refinement of 1-3-2-6, reportedly published in 2006. The only change: the step 4 bet drops from 6 units to 4.
That one number fixes the system's biggest emotional weak point.
The trade: you give up 2 units of maximum win (+10 vs +12) but convert the WWWL breakeven into a +2 profit.
That WWWL outcome is the second most frustrating result in the original system. Three wins in a row, and you end up with zero. The 1-3-2-4 turns that into a win. The cost? Your jackpot cycle pays +10 instead of +12.
For risk-averse players, the 1-3-2-4 is the stronger pick. For players who want maximum upside from completed cycles, the original 1-3-2-6 wins. Both produce the same house edge applied to total money wagered. The difference is purely in how the variance distributes across outcomes.
If the WWWL breakeven would frustrate you (and be honest with yourself about this), the 1-3-2-4 removes that frustration at a very small cost.
Two popular positive progression systems, different philosophies. Here is the direct comparison:
Paroli is simpler and caps the maximum cycle loss at 1 unit. The 1-3-2-6 can lose up to 2 units on a WL result but compensates with the step-3 profit lock and a higher completed-cycle payout.
Neither is objectively better. Paroli is the minimalist option. The 1-3-2-6 is for players who want more structure and mid-cycle protection. Pick the one that matches how you think about risk.
Baccarat: The system's natural home. Player bet (1.24% edge) or Banker bet (1.06% after commission). The Wizard's analysis centers on baccarat, and the system is most commonly discussed in baccarat circles. If you are playing crypto baccarat, this is where the 1-3-2-6 runs cleanest.
Roulette: Even-money bets on European roulette (2.70% edge). French roulette with La Partage (1.35%) is the ideal fit if you can find it at your preferred crypto roulette table.
Craps: Pass/don't pass line bets. Straightforward application.
Blackjack: Awkward fit. Naturals paying 3:2, splits, and doubles all break the clean four-step progression. Some players at crypto blackjack tables ignore these complications and treat each hand as a simple win or loss. It works mechanically, but the variable payouts mean the profit math from the five-outcomes table does not hold precisely. Use it here if you want, just know the numbers get fuzzy.
